Description

CRIES is a 10-point scale, using a physiologic basis similar to APGAR: Crying; Requires increased oxygen administration (distress and breath-holding); Increased vital signs; Expression; and Sleeplessness. (Krechel 1995) CRIES (Table 1) was validated for post-operative patients; to adapt its use for the ED, substitute “preoperative baseline” with normal range for age. Although the numerical values of CRIES have not been validated to date in the ED, the clinician may find the domains included in CRIES to be a useful construct in assessing neonatal pain.
