Persistence of clinically relevant viruses on dry inanimate surfaces

Most common viruses persist on surfaces for days / weeks / months & can be a source of transmission. The novel coronavirus may be similar to SARS (since their genetic codes are ~80% similar). Here's a summary of different viruses

Type of Virus - Duration of persistence (range)

Adenovirus	7 days to 3 months

Astrovirus	7 days to 3 months

Coronavirus	3 hours

SARS associated virus	3 to 4 days (-80% similar to 2019-nCoV)

Coxsackie virus	> 14 days

Cytomegalovirus	8 hours

Echovirus	7 days

Hepatitis A virus	2 hours to 2 months

Hepatitis B virus	> 7 days

HIV	> 7 days

Herpes simplex virus	4.5 hours to 8 weeks

Influenza virus	1 to 2 days

Norovirus	8 hours to 7 days

Feline calici virus (FCV)	8 hours to 7 days

Papillomavirus 16	> 7 days

Papovavirus	8 days

Parvovirus	> 1 year (most persistent!)

Polio virus Type 1	4 hours to < 8 days

Polio virus Type 2	1 day to 8 weeks (wild Type 2 eradicated!)

Pseudorabies virus	2 7 days

Resp syncytial virus	Up to 6 hours

Rhinovirus	2 hours to 7 days

Rotavirus	6 days to 2 months

Vaccinia virus	3 weeks to > 20 weeks
