Secondary Causes of Hyperlipidemia

Nunerous secondary causes of hyperlipidemia exist; screening for the presence of these underlying factors should be IRIfonned before initiating phannacologic therapy for a dyslipidemia. These lists are not exhaustive.

Hypertriglyceridiemia:

 • Diabetes mellitus, Chronic renal failure, Hypothyroidism, Glycogen storage disease, Stress, Sepsis, Alcohol excess, lipodystrophy, Pregnancy, Oral estrogen replacement therapy, Antihypertensive drugs (beta-blockers, diuretics), Glucocorticoid treatment, Protease inhibitor therapy, Acute hepatitis, Systemic lupus erythematosus

Hypercholesterolemia:

 • Hypothyroidism, Nephrotic syndrome, Anorexia nervosa, Acute intermittent porphyria, Cholestasis, Obstructive liver disease, Corticosteroid treatment, Protease inhibitor therapy
