Anaplasma Infection - Anaplasma phagocytophilum

Pathophysiology: 

 • Obligate, intracellular bacteria

 • Transmitted via blacklegged tick — Ixodes scapularis

 • Infects granulocytes, within morulae

Signs and symptoms:

 • 5-14 days after bite

 • Fever, headache, malaise, myalgias, shaking chills

 • Rash is rare (< 10% cases), cough (30% cases)

Laboratory findings

 • Leukopenia (though increased immature forms)

 • Anemia and thrombocytopenia

 • Elevated transaminases
