Natural History of HIV Infection - Timeline of Progression
Acute:
 • Viral Transmission → High VL (steady state by 6 months)
 • CD4 drops
 • Mono like illness; Sx > 14 days a/w ↑ progression to AIDS
Chronic:
 • Stable VL, progressive decline in CD4 count
 • Asymptomatic, +/- fevers, sweats, weight loss, LAD +/- OIS
 • Effects of chronic inflammation
AIDS:
 • CD4 < 200 or AIDS defining illness
ART:
 • CD4 may increase x 50-150 in first year, then 50-100 each year until steady state
