Polychromatophilia - Note 2 large blue-gray erythrocytes as seen on H&E stain. On a stain for reticulocytes these cells would show retained RNA and be counted. The left photo also shows a schistocyte and the right photo an acanthocyte.

When the bone marrow is stimulated to release red cells rapidly and in great numbers cells which are less than mature are included. The reticulocyte is a normal phase in the progression from normoblast to mature erythrocyte (see nucleated red blood cells).
