Atraumatic Collapsed Athlete - Suggested Algorithm for Collapsed Athlete

In this review, the authors review that the most common causes of collapse in an athlete are usually benign, quickly reversible causes such as exertional hyponatremia.  Among athletes who experience atraumatic sports-related deaths, the vast majority are cardiac-related, often congenital etiologies  – HCM, anomalous coronary arteries, ARVC, myocarditis, Marfan’s, Long QT syndrome, WPW syndrome, and then other arrhythmic disorders. The non-cardiac causes include (in order of frequency) heatstroke, asthma, PE, and rhabdomyolysis.
The authors provide the following suggested algorithm for approaching the collapsed athlete:
