Growth of Physicians and Administrators 1970-2009


The chart is based on the work of David Himmelstein and Steffie Woolhandler, health policy researchers at the City University of New York, who have for decades documented the bureaucratic waste in the U.S. health care system and argued for a single-payer system. A 2014 research paper they wrote concluded that one out of every four dollars spent on health care goes to administrative work.
