Characteristics that are more likely to be associated with an innocent murmur include a systolic (rather than diastolic) murmur; soft sound; short duration; musical or low pitch; varying intensity with phases of respiration and posture (louder in supine position); and murmurs that become louder with exercise, anxiety, or fear. The most common innocent murmur is a Still murmur.
