COPD Preferred Treatments - GOLD 2018

COPD is a common progressive respiratory condition that can be prevented by avoiding smoking. Management of COPD is primarily done through use of maintenance inhalers that include LABA (long-acting beta2 agonist) LAMA (long-acting muscarinic antagonists or anticholinergics) and ICS (inhaled corticosteroid) options. According to GOLD2018 guidelines, patients should be categorized into groups A-D depending on their symptom level (CAT or mMRC) and exacerbation history. Once categorized, clinicians follow these preferred regimens to optimize patient outcomes. The general progression of therapy is LAMA, then dual bronchodilators of LAMA/LABA, and lastly LAMA/LABA/ICS. All patients also receive a Rescue Inhaler such as Albuterol. Be sure to counsel your patients and ensure they’re administering the inhaler correctly!
