Bupropion (Zyban) - Smoking Cessation

Bupropion (sustained release Zyban, not immediate release Wellbutrin) is a good option for smoking cessation. Since it takes about 1 week for stable blood levels, it's recommended to start bupropion 1-2 weeks prior to the patients scheduled quit date. It's available in 150 mg tablets, and patients take 1 tab daily for the first 3 days before increasing to 1 tab BID. After about 2-3 months of therapy, if patient feels stable and has been successfully not smoking, clinicians can discuss discontinuing the medication at that time. There are some major contraindications that are important to remember as well!
