PREPARATION

 o Consent

 o Position Patient

 o Monitoring

 o Time Out

 o Review Labs

 o Review Meds

 o Review Cxr

EQUIPMENT

 o Chest Tube Tray

 o Chest tube

 o Sterile gloves

 o Atrium

 o Lidocaine

 o Caps, masks, gowns

INSERTION TECHNIQUE

 o Scrub, drape, scrub

 o Anesthetize skin and deeper tissue

 o Make 1.5 to 2 cm incision through soft tissue and down to rib

 o Dissect above one rib superior Penetrate muscle and pleura using blunt dissection

 o Feel inside the chest to ensure that the lung is not adherent

 o Direct the tube and unclamp the tube as it passes

SECUREMENT TECHNIQUE

 o Connect to pleural drainage system and unclamp the tube

 o Secure tube using the Roman Sandal Technique
