Differentiating Features Between Central and Peripheral Cyanosis



Mechanism - Arterial destauration

Sites - Skin, mucous membrane of oral cavity

Temperature - Warm

Clubbing - Present

Secondary erythrocytosis - Present

On warming - Cyanosis same

Oxygen therapy - Pulmonary cause can improve

Exercise - Cyanosis worsens

Arterial blood gas - pO2 low



Mechanism - Increased peripheral utilization

Sites - Only skin involved

Temperature - Cold clammy

Clubbing - Absent

Secondary erythrocytosis - Absent

On warming - Cyanosis reduces

Oxygen therapy - Cyanosis reduces

Exercise - Cyanosis same or improves

Arterial blood gas - pO2 normal
