Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD): Pathogenesis and Clinical Findings

Work & lnterpersonal:

 • Home Life Troubles - Conflict w. authority/parents, running away from home

 • School Problems - Peer fighting and poor academic performance

 • Poor Relationships - Unstable & abusive marriages with increased rate of separation/divorce

 • Work Problems - Poor performance, unreliable, irresponsible, frequent job changes/firings

Glib & Deceptive:

 • Distorted Persona - Superficially charming and grandiose sense of self-worth

 • Deceitfulness - Pathological lying and the use of aliases and manipulation for personal gain

 • Behaviour Rationalization - Victim blaming, minimizing the harmfulness of their behaviour, feel no remorse

Risk & Violence:

 • Unlawful and Violent Behaviour - Cruelty towards animals, other children, stealing, vandalism, fire setting (sometimes directed at own friends/family)

 • High Risk Behaviour - Impulsive drug use and sexual promiscuity with unsafe sexual practices

 • Aggression - Commits acts of physical assault



ASPD Mnemonic: CORRUPT

 - Conforming to law and social norms lacking

 - Obligations ignored

 - Reckless disregard of safety

 - Remorselessness

 - Underhanded, manipulative

 - Planning insufficient / imPulsive

 - Temper irritable and aggressive

Dx: >3 of above with patterns of behaviour since age 15 and evidence of conduct disorder prior to 15 yrs. Not exclusively within schizophrenia or bipolar disorder
