Causes of Acute Pharyngitis

• 200 visits per year per 1000 people

   - i.e. 400 visits/year for a PCP with a panel of 2,000 pts

   - 11 million diagnoses a year

Viral Causes of Acute Pharyngitis:

 • Rhinovirus (20%)

 • Coronavirus (>5%)

 • Adenovirus (5%) - conjunctiva

 • HSV 1/2 (4%) — gingivitis/stomatitis

 • Parainfluenza (2%) - croup

 • Influenza (2%)

 • <1%: coxsackievirus A (herpangina), EBV, CMV, HIV-1

Bacterial Causes of Acute Pharyngitis:

 • Group A beta-hemolytic strep (5-15%)

 • Group C & G beta-hemolytic strep (5%)

 • <1%: Neisseria gonorrhea, Corynebacteria diptheriae, arcanobacterium haemolyticum, chlamydia pneumoniae, mycoplasrna pneumoniae
