Position Overview

The Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) position is an executive-level position at eClinicalWorks responsible for leading the Patient Safety and Clinical Risk Management Departments at eClinicalWorks. This position will play a key role in making sure we continue to deliver and maintain safe and high-quality Health-IT products to our customers.   The Chief Medical Information Officer will champion patient safety, software quality and medical initiatives at eClinicalWorks.

Responsibilities

  • Executive level responsibility for the Patient Safety and Clinical Risk Management functions at eClinicalWorks
  • Executive and strategic responsibility for planning, developing and executing to completion all projects and initiatives relating to Patient Safety
  • Provides leadership to patient safety programs through collaboration with internal and external customers in furtherance of a Culture of Safety and in compliance with eClinicalWorks’ Corporate Integrity Agreement
  • Develop and mentor staff to build a culture of excellence within the Patient Safety and Clinical Risk Management Departments
  • Establishes, implements, and communicates the strategic direction of the organization’s patient safety and clinical risk divisions
  • Collaborates with executive leadership to develop and meet company goals while supplying expertise and guidance on patient safety and clinical risk management
  • Collaborates with other divisions and departments to carry out the organization’s safety and quality goals and objectives
  • Identifies, recommends, and implements new processes and systems to improve the Patient Safety and Clinical Risk Management functions
  • Presents periodic performance reports and metrics to the chief executive officer and other leadership
  • Maintains knowledge of emerging technologies and trends in the industry related to patient safety and clinical risk management
  • Identifies safety-related training needs and ensures proper training is developed and provided
  • Recruits, interviews, hires, and trains staff in the Patient Safety and Clinical Risk Management department
  • Oversees the daily workflow of the departments
  • Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations
  • Handles discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy
  • Mentors Director, Managers and Team Leads within their function
  • Works closely with colleagues of various departments such as, Product Management, Engineering, Quality Assurance, Data Migration, Interfaces,  Implementation, etc.
  • Provides clinical safety information to relevant third-party vendors and ensure all clinical documentation is maintained for the life of the product
  • Works with the Product Management team in evaluating requirements of customers in the areas of patient safety and clinical risk management
  • Oversee the Patient Safety Committee monthly meeting from the clinical perspective
  • Manage the maintenance and updating of hazard logs at various software development lifecycle stages (Documentation)
  • Ensures continued compliance to patient safety and clinical risk related standards (such as DCB 0129)
  • Engages with eClinicalWorks’ Software Quality Oversight Organization to lead activities and programs required to fulfill recommendations issued by the Software Quality Oversight Organization
  • Provides clinical insight to ensure the organization’s compliance with regulatory reporting to local, state, federal and regulatory agencies as they relate to patient safety/risk
  • Uses evidence-based patient safety methodology to support, develop and implement initiatives across the organization in conjunction with cross functional leaders and departments
  • Facilitates and oversees organizational processes and activities aimed at ensuring prevention, timely identification, troubleshooting, reporting, and remediation of patient safety issues to mitigate/reduce clinical risk

This position is also responsible for ensuring the following:

Quality Policies and Procedures

  • Facilitates team meetings to update team members on current process and business roadmaps
  • Ensures that the teams are aware of the relevance and importance of their activities and how they contribute to the achievement of the quality policy and quality objectives;
  • Ensures department members adhere to all company policies and mandatory compliance protocols as required by eCW
  • Coordinates ongoing process analysis and process improvement efforts within the departments
  • Holds interdepartmental meetings to receive feedback and finalize process changes

Communication

  • Attends internal review meetings with other departments to ensure a good understanding of changes and its impact on respective departments.
  • Communicates process changes to team members regularly.

KPIs and Training

  • Oversees the tracking of resource performance using baseline KPIs on an ongoing basis.
  • Conducts annual reviews based on performance and KPIs.
  • Determines the necessary competence for personnel performing work affecting product and/or process quality as applicable.
  • Provides training or take other actions to achieve or maintain the necessary competence.

Requirements

  • MD/DO required
    • Currently licensed as a healthcare professional with clinical experience
  • 10 years of industry-related experience including three years in upper management required
  • 3 years of experience of implementation of Electronic Health Record in an ambulatory and/or acute care setting
  • 5 years of experience of managing Patient Safety, Quality, and/or Clinical Risk in healthcare settings
  • 3 years of experience in process improvement activities in healthcare settings focused on patient safety using industry standard tools and/or concepts (such as Lean, FMEA, Value Stream Mapping, etc.)

Preferred Requirements

  • EHR optimization experience preferred (Health Informatics)
  • Thorough understanding of clinical workflows in outpatient settings
  • Able to develop flexible, transferable models for pathways of care experience in clinical outcomes and quality management
  • May require occasional travel
