Angioedema - Classification Diagnosis and Treatment

Types of Angioedema:

 • Acute allergic angioedema - Usually occurs with urticaria within 1-2 hrs of exposure

 • Non-allergic drug reaction - Onset may days to months after first taking the medication

 • Idiopathic angioedema - Chronic and relapsing and usually occurs with urticaria

 • Hereditary angioedema - Rare autosomal dominant inherited disease

 • Acquired C1 inhibitor deficiency - Rare autosomal dominant inherited disease

Acute Angioedema:

 • Mast cell-mediated in > 90% of cases.

 • Bradykinin Mediated

Chronic Angioedema

Treatment of Angioedema - Eliminating or avoiding the allergen is key

 • Mast cell-mediated angioedema

 • Bradykinin-mediated angioedema

 • Idiopathic angioedema
