Stress Ulcer Prophylaxis



Stress ulcerations are common in ICU patients and may lead to hemorrhage if not adequately addressed. Critically ill patients require prophylaxis for primary prevention of bleeding from stress ulceration or treatment for stress ulcer-related bleeding.



Stress ulceration is defined as ulceration of the upper GIT (esophagus, stomach, duodenum) that occurs due to hospitalization. Hemorrhage from stress ulceration is secondary GI bleeding (nosocomial GI bleeding), which is distinct from, primary GI bleeding (GI bleeding resulting in hospitalization)
