Mixing Study

 • Clotting tests can be abnormal due to either a clotting factor deficiency, or an inhibitor of normal factor activity (e.g. antibody).

 • A mixing study differentiates between deficiencies and inhibitors.

 • Clotting tests generally only require factors to have 50% of normal activity in order for the test to be normal.

1:1 Mix of Patient's Plasma + Pooled Normal Plasma

→ Recheck abnormal clotting test (e.g. PT and/or aPTT)

 • Clotting test normalizes → Patient has a factor deficiency

 • Clotting test does not normalize → Patient has a factor inhibitor
